What is the most important thing most white Americans don’t know about race?

That they have one.

I knew enough to check off “white” on forms, but I had no idea how being white had influenced my life experiences and outcomes. Though I could have given you examples of when and how I experienced being a female, being a New Englander, and so forth, I would have been at a loss to articulate how being white had shaped my perceptions and experiences. It turns out that this is the first step for any white person trying to assess and address racism and the inequities it creates.
